James Cameron advises Arnold Schwarzenegger on new Terminator

Terminator sequel must be 'more about' Schwarzenegger's T-800 character, says director of original films

James Cameron has told Arnold Schwarzenegger to ensure he is the focus of the next Terminator film before signing up to return to the iconic role.
Cameron, who directed the first two films in the dystopian sci-fi series but was not involved in the most recent two, has signalled his distaste for later Terminator entries on multiple occasions, famously pointing out that he "told the story" in 1991's Terminator 2: Judgment Day. However he told MTV he met up with Schwarzenegger last autumn and tried to be "as encouraging as possible" about the proposed project.
"Frankly, at that time, I thought it needed to be more about him," Cameron said. "I told him he should not do it until it's focused on his [T-800] character, or he shouldn't do it. I think there are some great stories that can be told about that character that haven't even been thought of yet."
After eight years away from Hollywood, the former California governor signalled his intention to return to the role of the Terminator in April last year. Justin Lin, currently the toast of Hollywood after returning the Fast and Furious franchise to box office credibility, was set to direct but dropped out in September.
The return of Schwarzenegger (even at the age of 64) to his most iconic role makes a fifth Terminator film a tantalising prospect for studios, even if the series has not been at its best since Cameron's last outing. The first non-Schwarzenegger film, 2009's Terminator Salvation, was the worst-reviewed so far, although it still made $370m (£225m) globally (albeit on an enormous $200m budget). The former bodybuilder appeared only as a CGI recreation of his younger self.
Terminator 5 was being touted around studios last year, but Schwarzenegger put plans for the film and his return to acting on hold in May when it was revealed he had fathered a child with a household employee outside of wedlock more than a decade ago. The Austrian-born actor and his wife Maria Shriver filed for divorce in July after 25 years of marriage, but there have since been rumblings that Schwarzenegger is still planning a Hollywoood comeback. He is due to star alongside old comrade Sylvester Stallone in the action film The Tomb for director Mikael Håfström, and has also signed on for a sequel to the 1988 comedy Twins, which saw him portray Danny DeVito's not-so-identical sibling. Titled Triplets, the film will add a third long lost brother into the mix, with Eddie Murphy the current favourite to take on the role.

Predicting Snow White And The Huntsman And Piranha 3DD Reviews

The Update:

Predicting Snow White And The Huntsman And Piranha 3DD Reviews

Memorial Day weekend is when I make my annual pilgrimage to the racetrack for its opening day. What better way to spend my hard-earned CinemaBlend dollars than on the ponies? But before I head off into a devolving mess of booze, gambling and the end of my kid’s college fund, we better check in on this week’s flicks. I mean come on, we’ve got fairy tales and fairly- crazy fish to fry.

Just remember, I'm not reviewing these movies, but rather predicting where they'll end up on the Tomatometer. Let's take a look at what This Rotten Week has to offer.

Snow White and the Huntsman

Sometimes I watch my one year old daughter prance flightily around the living room and wonder when she’ll be ready for a healthy dose of fairy tales. When I’ll pass along the classic stories of good and evil. Of love and loss. Of princesses and frogs. Of evil witches and dungeon towers. Stories with morals and lessons and feelings. And then I watch a trailer like the one for this flick and say, “Fuck it, my stories will be boring as hell. Just watch this movie, you’ll get it kid.”

Hollywood, by and large, loves to take fairy tales and put there own “spin” on them. Studio execs want nothing more than to “update” something old and worn out. Hell, look no further than Mirror, Mirror (50%) for another play on Snow White just this year. But even with the recycled factor, I think this movie has a chance. Trailers do not a movie make, and better critical prediction writers* than this guy have fallen victim to the allure of 120 second movie capsules. But I think this movie has the goods.

*Kidding, I’m the best and only one out there.

This flick’s got action, adventure, Charlize Theron, sorcery, swordplay, Theron, axes, beasts, Theron, thematic elements of “destiny” and oh yeah, Theron. That’s a winning combo. And sure there’s first time director, and first time, well, anything, Rupert Sanders behind the lens. But the cast is quality, it’s a new take on the tired old fairy tale theme, and if nothing else, hopefully this flick means Hollywood won’t come out with another Snow White movie for at least a decade. That’s enough for me. The Rotten Watch or Snow White and the Huntsman is 72%.

Piranha 3DD

There’s an old saying in the critical prediction biz that goes something like this: Fool me once with a campy horror movie starring CGI’ed, psycho, bloodthirsty piranhas, shame on you. Try and fool me twice, well you get the idea, I don’t remember the whole quote.

The original Piranha 3-D (Predicted: 18% Actual 73%) represents one of my greatest misses ever. In fact it’s difficult, even if trying, to whiff by this many Tomatometer percentage points. At the time, I didn’t totally understand the movie-makers were going for over-the-top campy horror. It just looked like an awful movie. But Piranha 3-D worked as an almost an ode to B-movie cheap thrills. And critics kind of, don’t pardon the pun, ate it up.

But it ain’t happening again, even with the return of Hasselhoff. I’ve got a bit of a head start here and early reviews have Piranha 3DD (You need to at least applaud their choice of title) as having the elements of awful I expected for the original. This one looks unapologetically bad. Director John Gulager (Feast-56%) seems to have taken the fun out of the premise, or whatever fun can be had with piranhas pureeing up humans over and over and over again. No one’s fooling me this time. This time a piranha movie critically tanks. The Rotten Watch for Piranha 3DD is 13%.

New Dark Knight Rises Poster Arrives Online

The first teaser poster for The Dark Knight Rises was utterly brilliant. In addition to giving us the incredible image of a crumbling Gotham City, the designers were able to subtly place in the Batman symbol that made it instantly recognizable. Then the movie shocked us again with the theatrical poster, which presented all of us with the terrifying image of a broken bat cowl. Now the third poster has arrived, and, while I hate to say it, I am thoroughly unimpressed with it.

Posted over on the film's Official Facebook page, the design is actually the exact same as the first, only the image has been moved to the top of the frame, some fake fire has been included, and Batman has been plopped in the middle. While it's not sloppy by any means, you do get the sense that the designers were running too close to deadline and needed to get something new out there. Check out the new poster below.

Want to know what the good news is? As much as I don't like this poster, it isn't making me in any way less excited for The Dark Knight Rises. The trailers and footage that we've seen has all been mindblowing and makes us ache for when the film is released in July 20th. Just remember this: X-Men: First Class had some of the worst posters we've ever seen, but the movie itself turned out to be one of the best superhero movies of last year.

The finale of Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises brings back Christian Bale, Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman, and Michael Caine, and will introduce us to Anne Hathaway as Catwoman, Tom Hardy as Bane, Marion Cotillard as Miranda Tate, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as John Blake. The film arrives in theaters on July 20th and you can see more from the title in our Blend Film Database.

Could A MacGruber Sequel Be Possible?

The first movie based on an SNL character in 10 years, MacGruber was a disappointing flop when it opened in 2010, making just $8 million in its entire theatrical run and disappointing a lot of us-- and there were a lot of us, I swear!-- who loved it and wanted to see it succeed. But star Will Forte has brushed himself off pretty well, doing excellent occasional work as Jenna's drag queen boyfriend Paul on 30 Rock and signing on to Alexander Payne's next film, and director Jorma Taccone has continued doing Digital Shorts for SNL, in addition to popping up as an actor on Girls and Up All Night and directing episodes of Parks & Recreation.

But just because Forte and Taccone are doing OK these days doesn't mean they've left the mulleted man of many improvised gadgets behind. Talking to Screen Crush, Taccone allowed for the possibility of a MacGruber 2-- though that wouldn't actually be the title. Here's the quote in question:

It would be me, Will and John [Solomon] writing it again. Every time I hang out with Will, we talk about all our cool ideas for the sequel. We have the idea for it and we have a title, but I won’t tell you what it is.

Of course, there's no indication that Universal or any other studio would want to fund a second MacGruber or that the original film's co-stars Kristen Wiig (who MacGruber marries at the end of the first movie) or Ryan Phillippe would return. But right now, it's enough just to know that Taccone, Solomon and Forte are still proud of it, and that someday those of us who fondly remember the celery-in-the-ass technique and Vicki St. Elmo's music career might get a chance to revisit that world. Hell, at this point if they made a handful of online shorts or an 80s-tastic music video, we'd all be happy with that too.

Skyfall The New James Bond Movie

A few weeks ago I spent some time in Las Vegas covering the annual CinemaCon. During Sony’s presentation they had the world premiere of the trailer for Skyfall, the new James Bond film directed by Sam Mendes and starring Daniel Craig. In my write-up about the trailer – in which I did my best to remember and describe everything that I saw – I offered up the prediction that the preview would be attached to the next Sony release, which happened to be Men in Black III. It turns out I was spot on, as Men In Black III arrives in theaters this Friday and today we have the first ever trailer for Skyfall.

Check it out!

Skyfall has everyone’s favorite British spy fighting a war on two fronts, as an old secret comes back to haunt M (Judi Dench) and test’s Bond’s loyalty to her, while a threat comes to destroy MI6. The film also stars Javier Bardem, Albert Finney, Ralph Fiennes, Helen McCrory, Berenice Marlohe, Ben Whishaw and Naomie Harris. The movie arrives in theaters on November 9th and you can see more from the title in our Blend Film Database.

New photo of Bane from ‘The Dark Knight Rises’, reveals why he wears the mask

The Dark Knight Rises kicks off with the question “why does he wear the mask?” and now thanks to a short article in Rolling Stone magazine, we have an answer! Here’s a quote straight from the mouth of director Christopher Nolan:
Bane is someone ravaged by pain from a trauma suffered long ago, and the mask dispenses a type of anesthetic that keeps his pain just below the threshold so he can function.
Update: Some fans have pointed out that costume designer Lindy Hemming revealed similar news back in the November issue of Empire magazine:
He was injured early in his story. Hes suffering from pain and he needs gas to survive. He cannot survive the pain without the mask. The pipes from the mask go back along his jawline and feed into the thing at the back where there are two canisters of what ever it is…the anesthetic.
What do you think of this alternative to the typical “Bane venom” we’re familiar with from the comics? Let me know in the comments, and check out the full photo from Rolling Stone in the gallery below.
